Thank You for 150 Years

2023 marks a significant milestone for Citizens State Bank…our 150th anniversary! While we celebrate, it’s worth considering why we have remained a viable business for this long, and it’s just as essential for us to focus on the path forward.

Call us old-fashioned, but we believe there’s a reason we’re one of only around 1,000 American companies that have been around for over 100 years, and that reason is our community. We’ve grown with our hometowns – through good times and bad – and like them, we’ve learned the importance of Midwestern values like hard work, integrity, and Hoosier hospitality.

We believe following the roadmap of the past 150 years – helping our clients, co-workers, and communities succeed – will serve us well during the next 150. Sure, there will be twists and turns in the road ahead, but we’ll continue to remember what got us here while we remain agile as things change.

Sesquicentennial

"Sesquicentennial" isn't a word you hear every day, and for good reason - there aren't a lot of organizations that get to celebrate 150 years. While we tend to look forward, it's interesting to take a look at what was happening when we started...

We're in some pretty impressive company...

1873 was a great year for entrepreneurs! A few of the products introduced include (clockwise from left):

  • Fred and Lewis Hatch introduced the above-ground Tower Silo.
  • Similar devices had been introduced, but a "Type Writer" designed by Christopher Latham Sholes took off as the "QWERTY" keyboard made it usable.
  • Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis patented the idea of using copper rivets on heavy work pants, creating "waist overalls," or blue jeans.
  • Henry M. Rose introduced a product he designed "to control a "breachy" cow."  That product? Barbed wire.
  • Adolph Coors and Jacob Schueler established a brewery in Golden, Colorado, creating Coors Beer.
